In 1971 the Who came out with their masterpiece Who’s Next ,arguably their best record, one of the classic staples of 70’s Rock that has stood up to the test of time. And like that album, the band themselves have stood up magnificently to that same test of time, although they lost two of its original members since that album.
My first tour I saw , was the Who’s Quadrophenia tour , way back in 1974 at Madison Sq Garden. And since then , many many shows. And my most recent was a year and a half ago at Long Islands UBS Arena. And it was that show that compelled me to do this painting. This show from beginning to end was filled with Who classics , and the band was in top form. Even Roger Daltrey’s scream near the end of Wont Get Fooled Again was as powerful as ever. Yep, the Who still had it. So while doing this painting,I wanted to do them as they are now, but my thoughts went out to that very first show I saw, with Roger , Pete, and the late Keith Moon and the late John Entwhistle. So I tried to incorporate those two deceased members of the band into theme of the painting. My idea was to do them from years ago in black and white as a backdrop to Roger and Pete of today. I liked the idea and ultimately the result.
So going back to the Who’s Next album, the final track on the album The Song is Over, one of my favorites, gave me the idea of the name of this piece. The Who just keep going, their time is not over ,,not yet.. So here is my most recent painting, finished at the end of 2023, “The Song is Over-Not Yet!!” my tribute to the longevity and staying power of another of those great British Rock bands that I so love.
